New courses begin at UCSD and UCLA

To celebrate the beginning of 2011, the University of California San Diego and the University of California Los Angeles have posted new class rosters on their websites. Classes begin today.

A couple of good bets:

Crime Control Policy (website), Mark Kleiman, UCLA.
I’ve listened to Kleiman before in his other UCLA classes Imperfect Rationality (feed) and Introduction to Public Policy, (feed). I’ve enjoyed his insights about how public policy is made and his description of the methods for dispassionately evaluating policy alternatives. Kleiman is a national expert on crime policy, and this class is likely to be highly enlightening.

The Study of Society (feed), Ivan Evans, UCSD.
Ivan Evans is back with this introductory sociology course. He covers key thinkers and concepts of sociology starting with Karl Marx and Max Weber with acerbic wit. (The winter 2009 syllabus is here.)
