UCSD Sociology Professor Ivan Evans, who taught two great courses last quarter (previous post), is back for Spring 2009 with Violence and Society (website, feed).
With his trademark ironic wit, Evans reviews what the fields of psychology and sociology have to say about the sources of violence in human society. So far (we’re up to week 5), the emphasis has been on explanations of deviant violence and crime, rather than organized, sanctioned violence on the part of police or armed forces.
A caveat: As with many UCSD courses, you should be ready for lots of dead air at the beginning of each podcast, as well as quite a few missing lectures, or lectures that stop mysteriously in the middle (probably a dead battery problem). Also, if you’re interested, don’t delay. Most UCSD lectures disappear at the end of the quarter.
